Reimagining and Amplifying Mathematics Participation, Understanding, and Practices

Reimagining and Amplifying Mathematics Participation, Understanding, and Practices (RAMPUP) is a three-week summer bridge course for rising ninth graders that is undergoing a rigorous experimental trial in Summer 2024.

RAMPUP seeks to engage English Learners, alongside all of their classmates, in exploring cross-cutting concepts that span the domains of high school mathematics: algebra, geometry, and statistics.

RAMPUP has been iteratively developed across two summers and three districts, to increase the usability, feasibility, and educative nature of materials for mathematics teachers of English Learners.

The following are some resources created during the development of RAMPUP:

  • Redefining Approaches for Engaging English Learners with Mathematical Ideas: In this teacher practice brief, we explore why definitions are important, how they are currently implemented, and how teachers can engage students in generating, refining, and testing mathematical definitions.

  • Varying the Intensity of Scaffolding with English Learners: In this article published in Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching Pre-K-12, we explore how teachers can intentionally vary groupings, structure, and language while maintaining a rich and rigorous prompt to challenge and support English Learners.

  • Educative Curriculum Materials for English Learners: In this book chapter, we outline design principles both for student-facing and teacher-facing materials in secondary mathematics, with a focus on supporting English Learners.

  • Supporting English Learners by the Use of Patterns: In this article published by the California Mathematics Council’s ComMuniCator journal, we describe a lesson that has English Learners engaged in exploring and extending patterns.

  • All Sorts of Quality Interactions with English Learners: In this article published in Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching Pre-K-12, we explore how teachers can design sorting tasks to engage English Learners in quality interactions for different purposes as students are beginning to explore a concept, exploring it deeply, and then extending their understanding to new cases.
